October 2010

Welcome

We welcome you to the October issue of News At Eight, produced by Eight Marketing Co., LLC. Thank you for joining us.

So How Do You Like It?

My purse
now you know
Men, have you found facebook updates from the women in your life a bit suggestive lately? Especially from unlikely sources like your daughters, nieces, aunts and even grandmothers?

Posts by the thousands entice "I like it in the closet" or "I like it on the bed." In our company, one woman likes it where the dog can't get into it while another likes it where she'll remember it.

The "I like it" campaign is burning up social media channels in a viral campaign to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

Detractors dismiss the non-sponsored campaign as a gimmick that does not truly promote action, only innuendo. But fans, including us, feel differently.  The campaign gets women together on a bit of an inside joke, generating surprise, curiousity and ultimately action.

And while it may generate unwanted imagery in a tired or overworked mind (presumably of a male persuasion), it has a unique empowerment to it.

As discussed in our book of the month, "The Dragonfly Effect," social media can generate tremendous involvement if it doesn't require enormous action.

So what do you think? Join the discussion on our facebook page.
Michener Art Museum
Paul EvansPaul Evans PEI Exhibit
Eight Marketing is proud to continue its work with the Michener Art Museum, this time on the strategic marketing planning for an exhibit commemorating the work of Paul Evans.

Best known for using his welding, metallurgy, and jewelry design skills to create metal furniture with sculpted, high-relief abstract forms, Evans established a reputation during his lifetime as a creative and prolific designer of unique studio furniture.

While names like Charles Eames may be better known to the general public, Evans' work is internationally recognized, as demonstrated by his influence on today's designers and even recent sales through Sotheby's. Evans was born in Newtown, PA and did much of his influential work at his New Hope Studio.

To learn more about Paul Evans, visit the Michener Art Museum's bucks county artists profile page.

To brainstorm ways you or your organization can partner on this exciting exhibit, email us.
Marketing Book of the Month

The Dragonfly EffectThere are many books on social media and marketing but when Malcolm Gladwell devotes a lengthy feature in this week's The New Yorker to one, the buzz fills the internet. In this case, the buzz was made by a dragonfly.

The Dragonfly Effect: Quick, Effective, and Powerful Ways to Use Social Media to Drive Social Change focuses heavily on the strengths and limits of social media.

Why a dragonfly? The authors explain it is because the dragonfly is the only insect that can use its four wings to fly in any direction. They identify the wings as creating a goal, grabbing attention, engaging others and finally, empowering others to take action. In their words, it's F-GET: Focus, Grab Attention, Engage and Take Action.

Campaigns profiled include Obama's historic grass roots campaign and even a bone marrow drive.

To learn more, visit authors Jennifer Aaker's and Andy Smith's website. The website includes active models of their approach in action in addition to freeviews of their presentations. To purchase a copy of the book, click here. To join the discussion, visit us on facebook.

Have a book you'd like to recommend as the next Marketing Book of the Month? We'd love to hear from you. Email Fran Walish or Alison Lambert with your suggestions.
